In 2009, the Performing Rights Society launched its Heritage Awards scheme which has celebrated the genesis of icons in local, live music venues. The annual award is given to UK venues that have played a central role in music history by giving now-famous acts their first gig and supporting their road to success. These plaques allow visitors to identify these key venues, many of which are still in operation today. Pop music tourists can put together their own trail around these legendary venues and our region has a number to offer music fans, including the flat where Dire Straits played their first gig and the university union which hosted the first Queen concert.
